Trader Jack’s Island Grill; My "Food – Cation"

piratefoodThere is discovery of epicurean delights throughout Trinidad and Tobago. Some of these treasures are hidden in plain sight like Trader Jack’s Island Grill at Movietowne Port of Spain. This is a themed restaurant inspired by the legend of Trader Jack; the merchant who got lost in a hurricane and landed on a Caribbean island where he established a lucrative business trade. This is not so far fetched as this happened between the 1930’s and 40’s yet the restaurant evokes emotions of  an era where his business would have been thriving, oil would have been booming and tourists would be seen cruise lining to Trinidad as depicted in the pictures in the restaurant. There are ponds with turtle, fish, trees, dried thatch like roofs for that exotic and natural island vibe. The seats, bar and dining areas are in sync with the nature isle aesthetic.

Of course, I can never make up my mind when we go out  because I see and want too much! But when I saw Trader Jack’s there was no hesitation that this would be my choice. It looked like a restaurant at a resort hotel except at a multiplex which is awesome. Definitely, this is a first I have seen here in Trinidad.  You need to see it to believe it too! I highly recommend it. The prices are reasonable for the high quality and great quantity of food that we ordered. The service was humble and hospitable. My most unforgettable food experience that day was Trader Jack’s for making me feel like I got to unwind and relax without leaving the country like a staycation but a “food-cation” !

Abraham’s Grill Hut; Central’s Flyover Favourite

We have all become familiar with the international franchises and their family food restaurants. But I don’t think they excite us as much as our locally owned outlets like Abraham’s Grill Hut. My trip to Abraham’s  always happens at the second franchise situated near Munroe Road flyover. Families couples, friends almost anybody who appreciates quality food  visit this place frequently. Hence, it is almost always cramped for parking space.

abrahams-grill-hut_52375111ba96a_800

The kaleidoscope of green, orange and white keep the vibrant ambiance far from sterile. The menu boards look just as appetizing as the food. Even though the food is cooked in front of you the menu allows your imagination to stir as you begin to create your own images of what their grilled fish, jerk chicken, pasta, specialty dishes or  quesadillas may look and taste  like when you order.

If you are like me you would never make up your mind and stall in the line undecided for hours wondering which one shall be tried first. Of course,  I always end up ordering one thing then wanting another dish or their decadent smoothies and desserts. However, I am never disappointed with my choice. The quality and quantity for value of money is amazing. The service is warm and friendly and the surroundings are always clean. It is definitely “a soon come back”  for me.

The Mexican Love Affair

Mexican_8310ca_1882789

A culinary haven can sum up foodie destination Trinidad and Tobago. We are famous for our local cuisine and our love affair with food. Creative entrepreneurs have dived into this food niche. They saw the space for opportunity in this thriving food culture business such as developing an ode to Mexican food.  Similarly the consumers; tourists, visiting diaspora and locals in the domestic market reply to this growth when they literally clear their calendar for a food date!

My only advice to those of you skeptical about getting your heart broken from trying new foods is to just  “do it” because you only learn from experience duh!

seafood

My first local Mexican experience was Senor Jalapeños on Ariapitha Avenue. It happened  after a CLD fashion show and I was just…. hungry? Actually, I am always enthused to try out these new hot spots. I was super excited to see what they’ve done and how they captured the authenticity of Mexican culture. What a damper on my mood though as the only thing Mexican was the Jalapeño in the window and at after 9pm the food did not look as appealing and the employees seemed to be having some trouble expressing warm happy hospitality. I liked the lay out of the different condiments and dressings. The staff was informative and the general area was clean. There was no fish at that hour. The energy and vibe was dismal and I  retired for the night with a bag of  colourful salty chips and Pico de Gallo. Lesson for the staff if you do not believe in your product or service you cannot expect the customer to believe it either.

2013-11-30 11.09.47 2013-11-30 11.09.42

Next, I decided to try again at the other Mexican joint Senor Tacos on that hip strip near Grand Bazaar. Please forgive me but my travel, hospitality and tourism orientation forces me to subconsciously evaluate service organizations especially food with international standards . Hence,  I am immediately spun into a tailspin of utter disappointment if low standards prevail. Anyways,  back to the story. So obviously the employees didn’t seem very Latin. Next, I noticed, that there were a few sauce pots brewing. They appeared to be some sort of meat or something cooking in the back.  However,  I just find it unbelievable that taco shells were prepackaged in containers and boxes. Imagine my further despair when I saw that the fish was really ready made fish sticks from a bag in the refrigerator. Then my toppings that were all inclusive were regular. So I had to pay extra for a “Mexican” experience that included pickles and jalapenos taken from a jar and guacamole ready made from prepackaged container. (My Miss Piggy grunt!) Seriously! Furthermore,  my pain was enhanced when they wrapped it up and put it on a warming bed. Umm no… $40TT dollars for two depressing, whole wheat tacos with extra paid for specialty toppings.

On to stop numero tres,  Mr. Rango’s Cook House and Bar at Price Plaza Chaguanas. One word amazing ! Mr. Rango offers Tex Mex cuisine; a fusion of Texan and Mexican food. Hell, most of the staff speak Spanish  and they have a good command of English language! Amazeballs! The branding is everywhere from floor to ceiling. table mats to their signature Rango movie character in the bathroom. Of course their slogan “food, friends and life” is captured in all their branding of menus, table mats and pepper sauce bottles. The service is attentive and quick. The dessert shelves were well stocked with decadent cakes. You can dine in or outside or take away your food. The decor, lighting, seating for take away service, bar and dining is very tastefully done. I even spotted cactus plant. Television screens surround the bar area but  you can choose a more intimate setting if you want. How could I forget ! The music was pure latino vibes! Hallelujah! My friends ordered honey BBQ chicken, coconut shrimp and fries and lamb and mashed potatoes with vegetables. The presentation looked as yummy as it tasted ! On leaving, we even got a brief history of Tex Mex food and the unique fusion served at Mr. Rango’s. Talk about turning up the night a notch ♥. While  the menu was a bit pricey my friends didn’t mind the trade off since great food, service and ambiance were worth the cost.

So  my sour face from my choices was quite temporary. You have to do to experience and most times learn from experience . Now let me back up a bit here. I understand the three Mexican type food concessions are family(Senor Jalapenos), street (Senor Tacos) and  upwardly mobile chic restaurant (Mr. Rango’s). Yet, my evaluation was based on the context of quality of food, cleanliness, taste, quality of  service, aesthetics, vibes and any wow factors that left “soon come back” lasting impression. So, I’m terribly ecstatic about my new favorite Mexican food spot in Trinidad so go check it out! I hope you have as fabulous a time as I did at Mr. Rango’s

#foodloversdreamcometrue

Thank you Mr. Rango’s for truly sharing your culture not just the celebration of  food, friends and life!

The Magnificent Hayes Court- Project Restoration

20140110_175148

Pilgrims walk the holy land of Israel, visit the Taj Mahal Temple in India and take a journey to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. In Trinidad a romantic stroll, a jog or a drive by Hayes Court just one of The Magnificent Seven around the Queen’s Park Savannah has similar bearing and contributory value to society. Hayes Court is a residence for Anglican Bishops. It is a beautiful landmark with British and French architectural influences she stands proud just across the street from Queens Royal College. Her aged and withered soul has 140 years of an earful and eyeful of cataclysmic change in the land. She was named after  Bishop Thomas Hayes who has never been able to occupy residence there. Today, her 5 bedrooms are uninhabitable.

2014-01-10 18.16.50

A cocktail launch last Friday served as the kick starter for pledges to restore Hayes Court. A dance recital by the The Continuum Dance Project,  a literary affair from a Pierrot Grenade  and imparting of knowledge from the Bishop animated the evening’s itinerary. Attendees included former Hayes Court architect , The Honorary Consul to Barbados, Mr. Audley Walker, The Minister of National Diversity and Social Integration, The Honourable Senator Rodger Samuel, German Ambassadors, other distinguished guests, the media and a warm hosting by Liza Miller and her business partner from Estuary PR company. It was noted that former bake sales  by the Anglican church have raised a quarter of a million dollars for the restoration of Hayes Court. Yet, this is not enough to absorb the total repair cost in excess of  24 million Trinidad and Tobago dollars. However, other plans to start tours and open the garden premises to host groups for  garden parties and weddings are also on the agenda for boosting funds for restoration of Hayes Court. If proceeds do not meet the need for restoration in a timely manner then this relic would be lost in time forever.

20140110_18435320140110_190058

Anglicanism spread throughout the world by teachings from the Anglican missionaries. In 1534 CE this period of reformation set the tone for the birth of a hybrid religion between the Protestant and Catholic faith. It was called Anglicanism.  In 2006, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams declared Anglicanism to be distinct from other Christian faiths based on the following. It was the reformed commitment to the priority of the Bible.  It also became a Catholic loyalty to the Sacramento and threefold ministry of bishops, priests and deacons. It is noted for a habit of cultural sensitivity and intellectual flexibility that does not seek to close down unexpected questions too quickly. Today it has approximately 80 million members and is the third largest Christian community after Roman Catholicism and The Eastern Orthodox Church. It is these tenets that encompass a faith that embossed the reformation and freedom.

Yet, today as an industrial twin island state we are poised forward as the business hub of the Caribbean. The diversified economy and attractive climate for investment takes us up a notch on the scale of developing country status. While  the state is nowhere near its colonized state one  can rest assured that this former colony has come a long way to be such a diamond in the rough. However,  it is quite odd that a stalwart that symbolizes and boasts of a faith that sparked the ingenuity for change, equal rights, freedom and independence is held with such little regard by its own independent republic state. Hayes Court is  an extraordinary marvel of architecture that depicts a pretty picture worth more than a thousand words. It is a statutory emblem of a plight and fight of a people once held captive but now free.  The failure to repair and maintain this building will only lead to the axing of  one of The Magnificent Seven which adorns the world’s largest roundabout Queen’s Park Savannah. It will serve as the demarcation of a memory and history of the people. But most importantly it will remain an agony to the existing Trinidad and Tobago society  and  the generations yet to come.

20140110_180044

Let’s Go Trinidad and Tobago would like to extend a heartfelt gratitude to estuary Pr and Hayes Court for hosting us !

CreativityDef

So it’s big business this word ‘creativity’ that is being thrown about so often along with the ability to imagine and create something that has never been done before. In my land of Trinidad and Tobago there is a heist of fashion modus operandi that seems to be taking November like a raging tornado. While iconic and emerging designers, stylists and creative directors aspire to be ‘creative’ and host fashion shows, parties and stimulate the local landscape for glitz and glamour in fashion destination Trinidad and Tobago, one must wonder about standards. Yes, the big issue of standards. Does it apply? Who has the final say? Who says whether it’s okay or not? It would seem as though there are no gatekeepers and the quality and standards are not a big issue.  But hello “wake up” it is a big deal. What sets you apart from others is your ability to recognize innovative and functional skill and talent. It makes you more in demand and well respected for your credibility. However, one can beg to differ that if a country is made up of a pluralist society where we accept everything then our standards are in serious jeopardy. But I need not digress any further.

I was invited to the launch of a ‘ready to wear’ collection by a local designer named Charu Lochan Dass. I was a bit late so I missed what seemed to be a welcome drink and the welcome party. Nevertheless, we were ushered in by a CLD brand ambassador. What a surprise getting in and seeing Wendell Constantine as the host for the evening. There was a musical interlude complimented by an eclectic energy of anticipation from the patrons. The designer gave her last words before the show started and it was hit after hit heading down the runway. The models were gorgeous but the collection was even more fabulous. While a picture tells a thousand words it’s unfortunate I didn’t get much pictures. However, this made seeing the collection up close so much more worthwhile. The prints and cuts of each piece were quintessential. There were even drama sets in each model’s walk striking the balance of empowerment and strength of the brand. The hues of vibrant red, the splashes of riveting blue with plunging necklines and the ensembles of a powerful black with revealing bits and pieces sparked a blaze of extraordinary without being raunchy.

2013-11-27 20.38.41

The designer in her essence exuded an aura of elegance, grace, poise and humility mixed with a maturity that came with age and experience. Her  Indian heritage and Caribbean upbringing, cultural endowments (India, London, Trinidad), university qualifications and years of retail experience prepared her to ‘create’ a distinct fusion of fashion. Undeniably, this has enhanced her ability to execute her passion for fashion. This suggested to me that even though this was her first collection launch in Trinidad  she was not an ordinary new comer to the local fashion scene but a game changer. The evening was wooed with “oohs” and “aahs” at the striking emotional connections that one could actually identify with the power and passion of the collection.  It was pomp, flair mixed with a strong sip of reality as every single piece was so “ready to wear”. The show ended with a final walk from the designer, a door prize and CLD “goodie bags” (filtered fashion magazine, CLD lookbook, call cards and a CLD t- shirt)  for ladies and CLD hats  for the guys given out by CLD brand ambassadors. The aftermath was enthralled of photography, fanfare, vibes and mingling.

2013-11-27 23.15.21

I think it would be safe to say that the gate keepers have inaugurated Charu Lochan Dass as part of the Trinidad and Tobago fashion scene. The collection was well received and the launch was a success. The reviews are still coming in and they have all received Charu Lochan Dass as a remarkable designer. She is definitely making waves and crashing the shores of this fashion destination with her creativity and innovation!

Let’s Go Trinidad and Tobago would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Charu Lochan Dass for the invitation!

We wish you all the best in your future endeavors!

Dreaming on Cloud Nine – Dream Ultralounge

birthday

So a birthday for 2 comes every year but this year it was different.  This year 25 hit me like a tonne of bricks while being stuck in fifth gear in my support for Trinidad and Tobago’s “stay to get away” campaign.

Yea… I did local for the first time in three years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dream
Me and my better half found ourselves on the Gulf View link road turning into Dream Ultra lounge’s car park before ascending the staircase to Cloud Nine where dreams come true. There we met our angel! Arnorld! We were greeted by him at the staircase. I could not help but notice the islandme magazines at the host’s reception area. Immediately, I got excited by their venture to support local.I loved the use of space, lights and colour schemes. Everything was in sync in a feng shui way. The vibe was totally chic yet very relaxing. Even though we were on a tight schedule our host made us feel welcomed and special. It was a slow lunchtime for them and Arnold just happened to be manning floor manager, chef, bartender and waiter for the moment.  He played all parts with zero neglect and maximum productivity.  I was shocked and impressed he was so professional  every step of the way ahead of the game.

2013-11-12 11.18.25

We ordered thai curry chicken with wedges and smoked Atlantic salmon served on garlic bread. It was a bit early for my “wino” temptations so pineapple juice and their in house lemon lime and bitters were the orders of the hour. They were delectable. We didn’t have to wait too long either everything went smoothly.  We even got surprises! Cheesecake slices for our birthday. How sweet! We had a little chit chat with Arnold and I couldn’t help but commend him for his extraordinary customer service representation. We wished him the best in his endeavors. Although luck is where opportunity meets preparation and Arnold is definitely prepared to kick it up a notch and take customer service to an exceptional level wherever his career may take him.

2013-11-12 11.28.53 2013-11-12 11.29.07

My knowledge and skills do not fail me when I walk into any restaurant or service based institution. There needs to be more passionate and professional persons like Arnold in the service industry who are willing to go the extra mile. This is a “must do” if we want to lead the race and set the pace for service excellence in Trinidad and Tobago. Dream Ultra Lounge has a serious treasure and a remarkable asset to their operations. Thank you to the Dream Team especially Arnold who made our 25th birthday sensationally special!

Style it out! Back to School!

back-to-school-2
While Trinidad and Tobago do not see a autumn/fall season we do have a wet season and we are in full throttle to the hurricane season.  This fall all college undergrads and grads are coming out with a bang! The first day of school is no longer a date on the calendar but a fashion event to remember. Hence, some fashionistas are calling on autumn trends and mixing them up with local vibes for  this semester’s functional but fashionable look.
Pantone_Fashion_Color_Report_Fall_20132
images
Pantone for each season can help you put your wardrobe together.  This season some colours to watch out for are grey, black,  navy, red, mustard, emerald, browns, coral to name a few. Dresses are taking a fancy to animal print, lace and floral that can be made uber “stoosh” with cardigans and blazers. The outfit can be dressed down with a jean jacket. In light of the season for cold weather flat boots and flats as well as some brightly colored sneakers seem to be the order of the day.Textured looks with faux fur and plaid features are the autumn favorites that can be added in minute detail than vavavoom runway styles perfect  for school. Our ladies are getting the nails done paying attention to jewel tones, metallics, holographic,  textured and sparkly glitter. The graphic tee is also making its appearance.
Moschino-fashion-show-fall-winter-2013-2014-587x440 2013-fashion-trend-graphic-print-tees-on-the-runway
While chic looks, rings and things are making an appearance. School can be quite expensive so cost effective yet eye popping “feel good” looks can be found by adding some pop up to your present wardrobe. A flirty or funky scarf can make your used outfit a belle of the halls. Hair bands and bows can add a cute stylish pop to a boring hairstyle.  Some simple accents to your outfit can be midi rings which can add that silver or gold lining accentuation to your look. A staple to your outfit is the jean. There is a throwback trend to the classic with bootcut, skinny and flare so resurrect an old pair or two.The oversized tote and school bag is seen as the stripe, messenger and patterned styles including holographic which I’m sure you have at least one of each if not all three styles in that closet of yours!
2013-spring-and-autumn-long-font-b-scarf-b-font-women-s-sun-cape-leopard-print
So this season style it out and be cool for school with these tidbit styles.
I’m sure you already have a few in mind!

Jazzy Vibes; Tablespoon Coffee and Dessert House

cc
If you have been to Coffee Bean in Barbados or  have developed that love and appreciation for the time and effort put into Cafe decor, seating structure, customer service, cleanliness and ambience then you will count your lucky stars and jump up and down like me at Tablespoon Coffee and Dessert House. Monday 26th August 2013 was a monumental day in my calendar. I finally  made it to Tablespoon Coffee & Dessert House after religiously following them from inception to the raving “foodie” reviews.  This quaint, rustic, jazzy vibed coffee house can be found on the Eastern Main Road in Curepe just a few buildings down from Hi Lo Food Stores. Their opening hours are usually 10 am until 6 pm between Monday to Friday.
2013-08-26 12.24.45
My particular jaunt for lunch led me to the Coffee House. Upon entering my restaurant radar started buzzing. Again my restaurant and hospitality experience accompanied by my burning love for food among other things can be blamed for this habit. Tablespoon Coffee & Dessert House is small but their tactful use of space must be commended in the coffee hues of brown wood accents, furniture and soft lights. I really like the idea of the scented candle and jazzy notes. The plates and cups were not matchy matchy and I applaud this table decision to mix it up and dare to be different! Personally, I believe this careful consideration given to structure and detail guarantees a customer flow at Tablespoon Coffee and Dessert House. This is our “trini” spin on the Bajan Coffee Bean and may I be a little bit ostentatious to say it has something extra but  my lips are sealed! Come EXPERIENCE for yourself!
2013-08-26 12.35.50
Tablespoon  is the most appropriate addition to the St. Augustine/Curepe area popular for lecturers, business professionals and students who may be interested in a tasteful breakfast meditation, quick lunch getaway, business meeting or casual dates with their cohorts at a real Coffee House. However, it is unique because the  cafe culture caters to all persons. Yes I said all! It is the first cafe I’ve been to in a long time that’s been done for the people by the people! Simply you see all different types of customers here. Couples, students, elderly, vegetarians and the average Joe or Jane.Their recipe is crafted in their personal relationship with their customers as they treat you like their own. Always going the extra mile to make their customers satisfied and happy. In addition, the tuna sandwich and crostone are exceptional !  Yes this means quality of food, quantity,  cost, presentation and of course customer service delivery all vie for a  5 star position in my gourmet books.
2013-08-26 13.43.31
I must commend  Chef Bean who is an exemplary young lady in the food and beverage industry. If I could give her an award I most certainly would have done it already! I believe She not only has the knowledge, skills and abilities to venture into this business but a hell of a lot of passion and personality; a winning combo to make her business the best in Trinidad thus far! She owned her information by confidently rattling of the contents of her creations. But it doesn’t stop there this was heightened by her very enticing food sales pitch that makes customers want to just buy buy buy! She also knows how to quickly counteract any  grievances that customers may experience if any at all.  I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw her customer service blue print execution. She effectively dealt with any situation that may arise in her Coffee House.  She cooked, served, cashed, took orders and helped out in whichever way she could she truly is a chef who is in command of her kitchen and House!
2013-08-26 12.26.32
Since returning to Trinidad in 2010 my impression of the restaurant business was understood to favor certain establishments even the Coffee House Model which must be built in the environment that predisposes that particular crowd in order to be successful. However, I learned something new on Monday. It dawned on me that once a chef has that passion for her craft she can easily cultivate the culture in her domain with a support staff like Tablespoon’s there’s no need for specific environments because once the culture is maintained the experience would always be beyond fabulous!  I guess the “foodies” in the “food universe” were listening to my plight for a premium, authentic local coffee experience as they sought to give me something better at Tablespoon Coffee and Dessert House.
cafe

Cheers to the entire staff and their Chef Bean for their poise to set the standard in our food and beverage industry and lead by charting a new way forward in the local restaurant and coffee business in Trinidad.

Thank you again for your hospitality

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Twenty20 Cricket Tournament is a hot topic with locals in Trinidad. Recently, Marylebone Cricket Club drafted a dress code which permits entrance into the Lord’s Cricket grounds. Some of these include shirts with collars for gentlemen but no polo shirts, T-shirts or anything made of denim. Whilst the ladies are banned from wearing bikini tops, bare midriffs, leggings without skirt. There is even a picture card to reinforce what the ideal dress code looks like. This immediately makes me think whether our cricket club needs to instill a few of these rules at Queen’s Park Oval? Our islanders are noted for wearing the said banned clothing items.Basically, this  could be a good thing or a bad thing.  My personal opinion is that this definitely spurs a fashion conscious cricket movement that could sweep the entire Caribbean!

mcc-dress-code_2218716b

So if we were to endorse these rules I still think our Caribbean designers would be able to add pomp and flair to Cricket Couture. The Art of Wear has a retro collection that maintains that golden era look with Hollywood pizzazz and an exotic twist of colour. Some of the designer’s dresses are at knee length and would work wonderfully for the event. Meiling has a few pieces in her Shirt Tales collection that speak volumes about classy couture that can be included for a Cricket finish. While there are other designers that would be on demand I believe Deron Attz and his tribal prints can make an eloquent but maintain the Caribbean’s ethnic aesthetic in its appearance at the cricket pavilion. These are my quick picks for CPL Cricket Couture!
