Passion Carnival Unleashes the "Amazon" for 2016

Traditionally, women of Carnival wore round necked, short sleeved blouses with skirts gathered and draped around the waist. They adorned their head with headscarves. They even joined their male counterparts in wearing masks. In 1858 white masks worn with costumes to hide blacks and coloureds from being identified for involvement in violence; the aftermath of the then Carnival parade. Women were found wearing satin dresses too.

In the 1920’s Carnival fell into hands of coloured middle class and the gay colourful free people. Pretty mas was also popular in the 1920’s and the black middle class joined the streets and respectable women played on the trucks disguised in pretty mas. There were all types of women to be found in streets for Carnival. This included Jamettes who were ill repute on charges for lewd behaviour. Then there were the high society women who wore elaborate costumes, embroidery, beads, braids, attend parties at private homes and elite whites paraded in small bands at elaborate balls; Government House, Prince’s Building, Queen’s Park Oval.

Fast forward to 1955 and short skirts were brought to Carnival streets when it was considered indecorous to show legs. This was the start of the bikini era as we came to know it. In 2016 there will be many costumes influenced by fashion and fashion influenced by costume. There will be continued concern for the creative direction of mas and costume comparability. Whilst striving to give into the high demand for this type of mas in these modern times by the increasingly younger masquerader population there is a relatively new band that balances this demand with the supply of creativity and design in Trinidad. Take a look at our question and answer segment with the band, Passion Carnival who will introduce their presentation for 2016; “Amazon” .

Explain the concept for “Amazon”  the 2016 presentation.
Our design team worked on creating a refreshing and modern line of costumes for masqueraders. The stunning pieces are all based on the concept of the amazon. We wanted to make the female costumes a bit more prominent and downplay the male costumes in comparison. This was done to emphasize the dominance and celebrate the strength of women.

Tell me more about the design of the costumes.
We recognize that masqueraders may have the want to tweak certain things on the costumes such as wanting high-waisted pieces, monokinis or wanting more or less fabric. Our design team would work with most requests as we want our customers to feel beautiful, be fully comfortable and be able to enjoy the experience of Carnival.

Who are your designers for this year’s launch?

November 23, 2015 – Scarborough, Trinidad and Tobago… With a steadfast focus to establish Kaj Designs as the Caribbean’s foremost mid-luxury fashion brand, the exclusive Trinidad and Tobago-based fashion house embarked on a bold strategy to penetrate the European market. This historic milestone introduced the brand to the thriving UK luxury fashion market via its distribution with the online boutique, Global Runway, coupled with an advertising campaign in Britain’s lavish specialist consumer magazine, Destinations Weddings and Honeymoons Abroad (DWHA). A Fashionista’s Summer – #fashiontourtt

On  Saturday 29th August 2015 Trinidad will experience a fashion tour. The tour is being hosted by the sole proprietorship,  Let’s Go Trinidad and Tobago.  This company is in the business of branding and promoting a Trinidad and Tobago ethos via creative design in fashion, food, frivolity, fun, travel & tourism.  The sole proprietor’s aim is to be a pioneer in innovation and design by improving lifestyles with impressions that last. The tour is part and parcel of the company’s aim to diversify the Trinidad tourism product and promote a niche tourism concept called creative tourism.

Creative tourism has been defined by Richards and Raymond ( 2000 ) as ” tourism which offers visitors the opportunity to develop their creative potential through active participation in learning experiences which are characteristic of the holiday destination where they are undertaken.” The fashion tour is under the purview of creative tourism. The clustering of industries such as the travel and tourism industry, the creative industry, the food and beverage as well as other commercial industries were strategically clustered to foster this product creation and economic linkages in Trinidad.

The primary target market for this tour is the new tourist whether that person is a stay over tourist or an expat in Trinidad. This person is interested in experiencing more than sun, sea and sand. The new tourist attracted to this product fancies a sense of belonging, identity, creating and taking back something with them, a sense of identity, a sense of community, increased self esteem. The secondary market is aimed at the domestic tourist and the Trinidad and Tobago diaspora who are keen on the Trinidad lifestyle. The market may include fashion buyers, fashion students and even creatives.

This is the first tour since the prototype tour in November 2014. Again, Let’s Go Trinidad and Tobago felt that preference should be given to the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago for the tour. Hence, the marketing campaign was heavily geared towards them as there was a feeling of not wanting the locals to feel ostracized in their home country. Other foreign entities were also approached similarly to the previous prototype tour.

fashion

The tour features  major fashion game changers in the Trinidad fashion industry landscape. The tour starts at 10:00 a.m. at Simply Runway at Grand Bazaar. An interactive styling session will be completed there with participants and local socialite, stylist and fashionpreneur Stephanie Ramlogan. Simply Runway’s owner, Candice Baccus is significant to the tour. She is the first fashion boutique to host rent free spaces for local designer graduates from the Caribbean Academy for Fashion and Design at The University of Trinidad and Tobago. She also accommodates stylist internships for emerging stylist graduates from the same university.

Stephanie Ramlogan who will execute the styling segment has her contribution to the fashion climate too. She is a known fashion blogger for No More Fashion Victims and a contributory writer for the Guyanese owned fashion blog; The Online Runway by Ashma John. In addition, No More Fashion Victims is also the premier local designer e-commerce store in Trinidad.

The next stop is Blue Basin  at The Cruise Ship Complex in Port of Spain. En route to Blue Basin  the tour guide, a travel and tourism student will engage the patrons in an interactive game on Trinidad’s fashion history. On arrival at  the first Caribbean designer department store patrons will indulge in  festivities with  Jessel Brizan, designer and owner of Blue Basin. He celebrates the store’s one year anniversary in fine style. There will be discounted shopping, complimentary wine, hors d’oeurves, a live deejay and more activities. Jessel Brizan was a lecturer at the Caribbean Academy for Fashion and Design. He will be discussing his creative process with the group and inviting them to open discussions on creative design with him and some other designers that are featured at his store.

The next stop is Woodbrook at designer atelier, Charu Lochan Dass. Charu was born in India and raised in Trinidad. She has been in retail for several years which added significant experience to her designer studies from the London College of Fashion. She has showcased her designer collections in New York, Amsterdam, Canada and Ibiza. Some of her designer pieces are also available in Ibiza for purchase. She will offer guests insight to her creative business and the creative process as well as introduce them to designer retail therapy. CLD will also provide patrons with refreshing fruit kebabs.

Meet the Bloggers

How-to-Recruit-and-Encourage-Bloggers-to-Advertise-Your-Products

Who are bloggers?

Blogs are web logs. Bloggers are skilled professionals in search engine optimization, social media marketing, writing, editing, publishing posts, designing and maintaining the design. Mostly, they are very knowledgeable about their field of expertise or hobby area whether it may be fashion, design management, creative design, the arts, lifestyle branding. Often their perspective is unique. They can be corporate bloggers, hobbyists, activists, stylists and even personal bloggers. They can be male or female. Furthermore, what they bring to the table in terms of their vision is even more worthwhile.

11427938_838306806250646_2051844964_n 11334718_838306969583963_1552072769_n 11122562_838306866250640_1447625733_n(Featured Designer Brands from Exhibit A )

Why do we need them?

The frequency of blogger inclusion has infiltrated the modern era of marketing. Today there is little to zero marketing divide. The target market reach is global. The customer is at the finger tips of the business man/woman. Lifestyle organizations have already recognized this. Hence, the blogger becomes pertinent, useful and important. The bloggers have their own niches and fan base. They can market other brands and drive publicity levels to higher heights. They can also be very critical and the way of the world proves that positive reviews can lead to the beautiful start on customer loyalty, target market confidence and a functional marketing campaign. However, a negative review just may lead to the downfall of the product or service the company offers. The way in which this commentary is handled needs to be determined beforehand. A negative review can point to dire changes and bring attention to some concerns for product/service redesign for improvement.

11304471_838306892917304_1499937999_n 11208740_838306762917317_1445391959_n (More Designer Brands from Exhibit A)

What is the problem for bloggers?

One of the main problems for bloggers interested in making a job out of this is income generation. There are several opportunities to create revenue online for bloggers. Nonetheless, other requests for them to attend and do media coverage are met with insufficient compensation. Bloggers have expenses too especially to do media coverage or a review (travel expenses, cellphone, internet, wardrobe, makeup, hair, time for editing, publishing, marketing). It is the blogger’s decision to take on such a request with or without pay for whatever rationale (charity, passion, favor or whatever). However, they have been underrated and gone unrecognized for their hard work, effort, time and contributions to the social media landscape and their countries for too long. Their only support being their reader and follower fan base without aid from a legitimate body to advocate for some or any of their concerns.

What has Trinidad and Tobago done to aid this problem?

The first edition of the networking event “Meet the Bloggers” was launched on the 4th May 2015 at Home smack in the middle of Exhibit A ( a designer space curated by former Project Runway Winner, Anya Ayoung Chee for shopping, creating, networking). The event was used as a platform to connect the “behind the scenes” bloggers with the designers, their fans and the public. The free event also allowed the space for networking, collaborating and of course shopping/buying local. It was quite ironic that this promotional event promoted persons who pursue their own end of public relations in their stratosphere. It was also a strategic move to identify faces to names of these blogger brands in a more intimate community setting. Moreover, it was also wise to recognize bloggers as they are the underground movement working tediously and passionately to promote local and regional lifestyle and designer brands. This is the first time in Trinidad and Tobago’s history that the bloggers were given this type of credibility and recognition for their contribution. The event went on from 4pm – 7pm and it was sponsored by Ciroc and Johnny Walker Gold Reserve who provided cocktails for patrons.

 The End?!

In a nutshell, Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean bloggers will continue to advocate, support and help revolutionize the social media landscape whilst still giving back to their host destinations. Meet the Bloggers is just one initiative that will hopefully spin off and inspire other initiatives to recognize the contribution and concerns of bloggers.

"A Few Steps in the Right Direction" – Trinidad and Tobago Fashion

step

The local fashion scene is buzzing with amusement, intrigue, glitz and glam. As a destination in this turn of the century Trinidad and Tobago’s revived fashion journey has only now begun. Trinidad and Tobago, as the premier fashion destination in the Caribbean upped the ante in the first quarter of the 2015 calendar. It seems like there were a few positive steps in the right direction  for Trinidad and Tobago, the fashion destination.

creativett

The Fashion Look Book

The Creative TT and Export TT collaboration has fostered a brainchild in the form of a Trinidad and Tobago Fashion Look Book. There has been  liaison with a target market in the French Caribbean to promote the sale of local fashion merchandise. The Creative TT board members anticipate that this will stimulate understanding by local fashion designers to be export ready. To aid this initiative there was a fashion workshop hosted by Creative TT for local designers on themes of export. A panel including Jennifer Williams Baffoe (specialist business advice consultant for creative industries), Raymond Wong (Professor at Fashion Institute of Technology/ co-owner of Intricate Concepts Inc. and Fourfront 1602), Soma Lisa Choudhury (Branding and Marketing Specialist for luxury designers) and Romero Bryan (luxury brand designer/ London College of Fashion graduate)  participated in Trinidad and Tobago Fashion Week 2015. They shared their creative expertise and international industry experience in these workshops.

2TFW

Another noteworthy step was the launch of 2TFW by Ashley Christmas. Ashley is a fashion designer and fashion events producer in the sister isle of Tobago. Ashley is responsible for the re-branded 2TFW formerly Tobago Fashion Weekend. Christmas spent his years in the U.S.A  and in New York under the tutelage of Raymond Wong and Joseph Mbeh. Christmas launched a clothing line and debuted his collection at Trinidad and Tobago Fashion Week in 2008 – 2010. In 2010, Ashley participated in a Tobago segment of Trinidad and Tobago Fashion Week. In 2011, he created Tobago Fashion Weekend. This year 2015 Tobago Fashion Weekend  became 2TFW (Trinidad and Tobago Fashion Week). It was expanded to include twenty five designers and spanned a week of educational workshops, tours, commercial opportunities and networking for fashion designers, models and all those involved in the industry. Fashion shows at Piarco International Airport’s atrium were used as promotional events for  (Trinidad and Tobago Fashion Week) 2TFW. In addition, an online fashion store became part of the fashion week with the sale of promotional fashion week attire.

International Media Coverage

Trinidad and Tobago realizes that the international marketing and the social media platform today bridges the gap in communication by connecting destinations to the world especially in the name of fashion. Claire Sulmers, an international fashion media representative was photographed frolicking in Trinidad and Tobago’s fashion, fun and food. Claire Sulmers graced 2TFW this year to do media coverage for the event. She is actually the owner and editor in chief at The Fashion Bomb Daily an online blog for urban “fashionistas”. The blog showcases fashion from runways, editorials as well as beauty and style advice. Fashion from around the world even minority groups appear on the blog. Claire has been trained under the eye of journalists and has worked her way up to owning and publishing her own blog. Some of her experiences include working at Vogue Italia, Essence Magazine and AOL. Also, she has an affiliation with Harvard University.

Creative Space

Forward advanced incrementation is brought back home with the person the Caribbean identifies as the one who gave second breath to Trinidad and Tobago’s Fashion Industry, Anya Ayoung Chee. She has created a space for creative artisans and like minds to network and collaborate at her HOME. She launched Exhibit A. This is a part of HOME where designers can host displays and shopping nights to name a few. These projects are curated under the supervision of The Project Runway Winner. This step is indicative of a safe haven and mentorship platform to fill gaps in the local fashion industry from commercialization, marketing and distribution from local designers to consumers.

In the future, this “pay it forward” system could potentially connect more dots than originally intended. The stakeholders, game changers and veterans help these creative entrepreneurs and they in turn help others by sharing what they know. It is a tried and true principle that has worked in other industries for years. It is definitely transferable to Trinidad and Tobago, as an aspiring  fashion destination.

exhibit A

Caribbean Fashion Recognition

This year a few pivotal points were established in Trinidad and Tobago’s fashion. However, another event will make a powerful statement in taking Trinidad and Tobago and by extension the Caribbean’s fashion to the world . This event is called Caribbean Style Week. This will be held in south Florida from June 23rd – June 29th 2015. Caribbean fashion, models, designers and stylists will be showcased. Panels, workshops, runway shows and special events are planned for this Caribbean Style Week. Caribbean fashion is gaining its fair share of international recognition. This can only mean more viability and visibility for Trinidad and Tobago and the region.

cfhttps://www.facebook.com/caribstyleweek?fref=photo

http://www.caribstyleweek.com/

Basically, if the stars continue their alignment and this momentum is reciprocated at light speed or even at this organic pace then the future for the creative industries (fashion) and Trinidad and Tobago as a fashion destination seems hopeful.

Trinidad Carnival: The New Fashion Season

International fashion gurus better stop the clock and change their calendar as there is a new fashion season in town. Although Carnival Fashion has been here a while its stamp is further embossed this year as it has grown to accommodate new fashion niches. Fashion is at an all time high during this time of the year! Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago is very different from the fashion weeks or fashion shopping months of other destinations. In this twin island state, Carnival may be perceived as two days of celebration but really it is a year round production as the cycle never ends. There are various genres of fashion as well as  different concepts of “fashion houses” as they are mostly known as “mas camps” . Regardless, there is almost a certainty of some degree of creativity and expression reflected in design. This sentiment is transferred to the client who wears the item and immerses himself or herself to become one with the costume to play the role of masquerader.

Trinidad Carnival has come a long way with wire bending, mental works and craft cutting skills that even  require some knowledge of aerodynamics for some innovations. The evolution of Carnival has spanned many decades since the inception of emancipation. The freed colony donned shorts, skirts, blouses, head ties and t- shirts to play mas. The face mask was also popular. Even when they got banned from Carnival attire the emancipated people engineered a way to use the face mask as handheld masks. They would more often than not put them on in the event of the casual riots that took place after Carnival. But the creative people could only dream more fascinating costumes and decidedly crafted Sailor , Blue Devil, Moko Jumbie costumes to connect with African culture and reenact it in their newly adopted homeland.

After World War II, Trinidad become home to many military folk. Hence, the inspiration to design military couture; gladiator style costumes, Grecian combat gear were inventive and spurred the design evolution on further. Pioneers like Peter Minshall came on the scene and used imported equipment and technology to speed up production for the demand or the output turnover of costumes in the mas camp . He continues to remain an icon for his contributions and portrayals that reflected the art of theater depiction and narrator style story telling in his Carnival mas concepts and productions.

Over the years, a greater majority has pushed the Carnival artisans to their limit of filling this costume demand. Hence, the packaging of  Carnival experience and costumes became prevalent. Today, there are younger masqueraders and designers. Nonetheless, the design has shifted to a ” less is more “ type of costume for some Carnival bands which are more popular with the young and upwardly mobile demographic who are concerned with their image.

There are a few designers who still contribute to avant garde costuming. Another evolution is the idea of Carnival Monday Wear. Designers found a new niche  to satisfy clients who do not have the time to sift through boutiques or cut up t-shirts and create their own wear for Carnival Monday or simply “fete couture”. Notwithstanding, the colour of Carnival resonates throughout this type of apparel as it did for decades. Yet, now more than ever embellishments and accessories such as ear cuffs, nail glam, make up even hair dyes and hair cuts are speaking volumes of style by their far from evanescent hues.

A spin off from all of this is the fitness fixation to get that body ready for the two day Carnival Street Party. Again another fashion niche is well put together for this arena. Colourful leggings and fitness gear customized to enable flexibility, comfort and confidence for the masquerader who is sweating off those Christmas carbohydrates and fatty tissues at the gym.

Overall, Trinidadian designers have creativity pulsing in their blood and passion for the arts as their veins. So whilst change continues in Carnival fashion the number of Carnival participants increases annually and the desire to create, differentiate and celebrate is still burning at the heart of every artisan. There is no doubt that Carnival fashion is the new season of this year’s fashion calendar for local and regional “fashionpreneurs” and experts. It won’t  surprise me if international fashion associations, designers, stylists, models and entrepreneurs  flee their snow ridden countries for a chance to capture a glimpse of the ethereal fashion experience of Trindad Carnival Fashion (often celebrities and socialites are welcomed to participate in the festivities every year). After all who would pass up  embracing this opportunity up close and personal in the sunny isles of paradise!

Fashion that Rocks

On to the review…

Fashion That Rocks was hosted on the 27th September 2014 by local designer Jelesha Cunningham of design label Jay Jay’s Designs at the Point Fortin Town Hall. This was a fundraising fashion event. It was a contributory show to support her ‘send off’ to showcase her Trinidadian designs in a Houston fashion show later this year. In addition, this was also her debut of the collection entitled Ethel named after her grandmother. Other designers included RastaChiq Creationz, Kern Bess, Kendy’s Designs, K’s Image Jewelry, Afrodisiac, Daww Creations and many more. These collections covered swimwear, resort wear, urban wear, street style, menswear and kids wear. Jewelry sets and accessories like hand bags were also featured on the runway. One designer, Kern Bess also sought to introduce the patrons to a bit of avant garde fashion with creative dresses made of newspaper stuck together by tape.

20140927_214341The feature designer for the night was Jelesha Cunningham. She is the protege of iconic Trinidadian designer duo Zadd and Eastman who also hail from Point Fortin. Jelesha’s most valuable asset is her ability to play with design. This is an artistic direction that will guide her end result. Her apparent humble nature has reinforced her ability to understand her clientele, their demand, needs and the execution of the delivery of their requests. This comes across quite clearly on the runway in the fit of the clothing to the size of the models. Some of her designs catered to a niche of average to medium built and plus size women (who are often forgotten in the designer fashion industry). Hence, this experience and innate quality guides her to tailor design to supply this demand. This basic business principle is sometimes overlooked by many entrepreneurs. (The golden catch is when the designer foresees what the client needs or will need and want but the client does not yet expect. )

20140927_224145Her collection also revealed her skill to style different cuts and her drive to manipulate design (which is extremely nifty when designing for the everyday woman with the regular fashion problems; tummy bulges etc). In essence, designers do not always have to create something new because new does not guarantee good design. Furthermore, people must understand that creation is “something from which nothing had begot…” which means the act of making or doing something that never existed before. This is where innovation comes into play by the skill to use different materials, colours, textures, patterns, prints, cuts, stitches and accessories (zips, buttons, embellishments). Thankfully, Jelesha has acquired this savor faire as this is again blatant in her Ethel collection. Overall, she managed a good turn out of patrons for her event who thoroughly enjoyed her show.
