Fashion Therapy – #IAM

Fashion Therapy is a worldwide phenomenon that has deep roots in retail therapy, wearapy and art therapy. Retail therapy is a confession of almost every human being. Often we splurge on at least one item that we use to make us feel better by increasing self esteem and confidence. Do you give the gift of fashion? Do you love to help others through your profession or personal accord of styling, make up art , designing, shopping ? Do you practice those “do it yourself” tutorials revolutionizing your old sandals, accessories, creating turbans, head wraps from scarfs and scraps of cloth? Do you do this with your “besties” ? Well consider yourself part of the movement. What movement?! I’m sorry I meant the lifestyle. Yes, the lifestyle to incorporate healthy stress relieving activities into your monotonous and hectic schedule.

diy Back it up!!!

Multi millionaire divorcee Mouna Ayoub spent more than 500,000 pounds a year on designer clothing. She was married to billionaire Nasser Al Rashid in 1979. Then she used clothes as a form of retail and fashion therapy during her years in the isolated environment of the Saudi Arabian marriage. She is even quoted as saying, “Fashion became my medicine- my only way out of a very restricted life,” (Rose and Allen, Teenagers Get Fashion Therapy). Another concept, wearapy is a term coined by television personality and style expert Jeannie Mai. She is quoted explaining wearapy as her psychology of style, “colours, textures and the way we reveal our body shape can enhance, reflect and effect our every mood and thought. Fashion has the power to fuel our souls and create a specific audience of energy in our lives,” (Style Bistro, Jeannie Mai Dissects 10 Celebrity Styles).

maiThere is further proof that fashion therapy is functional. The Arthur Centre at the University Hospital of Marseilles offers patients the opportunity to dress up in designer wear to raise self esteem and treat adolescent problems like anorexia and depression. It was noted that after the adolescents try on the designer clothes they are proud of their bodies again. There is reinforcement of positive behavior and extinction of negative behavior by trying to wean the teenagers off the behavior that is associated with their condition. Research at this unit has discovered that clothes are symptomatic to certain diseases. Bulimics prefer darker clothes and anorexics choose larger sizes. Hence bulimics are weaned to wear brighter colours. Soon the therapists notice progress when the teenagers start trying on clothes and progressing towards positive behavior. Then they leave the center. The center’s annual report of the first year has already indicated significant success (Rose and Allen, Teenagers Get Fashion Therapy).

But wait there is more… fashion is a form of creative art and design so it is also a form of art therapy (Oh yes it is!!). The American Art Therapy Association defines art therapy as “a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical , mental and emotional well being of individuals of all ages. It is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior , reduce stress, increase self esteem and self awareness, and achieve insight,”(Cherry, What is Art Therapy). Basically thoughts, images, perceptions, feelings and imagination from the inner self are coerced to emerge from inhibition through art sessions of sculpting, painting, drawing  and collage making.

retail-therapyIn Trinidad there is music therapy (Jamal Glynn), play therapy (Healing with Horses) and art therapy (Sian MacLean) but there is certainly a prevalence of fashion therapy although it is not formalized. We love to dress up and change up our look to events, home gatherings, school, work, church, other religious associations and jaunts to the supermarket or Sunday market. There are local fashion markets (RackedTT), creative markets( Upmarket, ThingsTT), local designer boutiques (Woodbrook is becoming the local fashion district) and enough resources to acquire textiles (Jimmy Aboud The Textile King), accessories, embellishments (beadcafe) to create your own outfits and start designing your own look or enhancing it. There are local beauty and hair care brands such as Sacha Cosmetics, Immortelle Beauty, Cher Mere. Infinite independent make up artists with easy access tutorials online help you change up your look (allyuh know I not joking when I say infinite almost everyone of you reading this knows at least one local make up artist).

fashion quoteSo in addition to your extra glass of Cabernet Sauvignon try some fashion therapy. The shopping for clothes, shoes, accessories, their inherent textures, colours, cuts, styles, the act of creating and reinventing your old outfits, personal appearance through make up, hair and nail art are just as therapeutic. Whether you do this alone, in groups or as a couple (yes this is not just for you ladies!) you have given yourself the freedom of expression of identity and the release of your pent up stress and anxiety.

Color-PsychologySo now that you know this is serious business and  “pinky swear” with me not to take fashion therapy for granted (lol okay you don’t have to do it…it was just a figure of speech).  But in future try  not to bail on the next shopping spree, make over or reconsider going out because you take hours styling your  OOTD (Outfit of the Day) or OOTN (Outfit of the Night). You might want to think about that favor you would be doing yourself. Oh and guys give the ladies a break and don’t hassle them when they take their time. It is merely because women are more emotional beings. They are trying to express themselves through their clothes and sense of style. The process of choosing an outfit is a detailed process that requires revisiting how certain colours and textures make them feel about themselves. This is unpredictable and can take from ten minutes to about an hour or more. So either learn a lesson from them, join them in this stress relieving venture or give them their time. Trust me it is definitely going to be worth your while in the long run.

Let’s Go Trinidad and Tobago

Iris Atsin – La Parisienne

inviOui! Oui! Oui! Take me to Paris!
Friday evening started off a bit stormy. I almost did not leave my house. But I felt like I owed it to Parisian designer, Iris Atsin to come out and support her first launch in Trinidad. After all she is “head over heels” in love with the island. In addition, the team at Let’s Go Trinidad and Tobago embraces those who share the same patriotic heart for our twin island republic.

The nitty gritty … Who is Iris Atsin? I have no idea really?! From the looks of things she seems to be a pretty long locked, brown sugar, tall, colour eyed french designer. All I know is the little buzz I saw on social media at Tobago Fashion Weekend, a few local magazine interviews  and of course her bold move to change  launch dates with me so that we would both attend each others’ events. ( So kind of her although due to unforeseen circumstances I had to cancel mine).

bran(photo courtesy IRIS ATSIN ltd)
La Parisienne Collection Launch took place at The Carlton Savannah. This was an excellent choice to use a local gem of a hotel. There was a good turn out although the rain brought some patrons late.  Those who cancelled or who left because they felt they may have died in anticipation if they waited for any more surely missed out. One does not get a second chance at first impressions or in this case a second chance to get a first impression of Iris Atsin’s first collection launch in our paradise isle.

look(photo courtesy Lime.tt)
Sir Charles hosted for the evening. But the collection did not need a host. The collection spoke, it sang and told me all I needed to know about Iris before I even met her. Parisian music blasted from the speakers and the models hit the runway! Each model’s hairstyle and make up was on point. They looked like Parisian dolls. Swim suits bustled down the runway to the beat of Jamaican artiste, Gyptian’s “Hold you” and international hit “Am I wrong?” by Afro Norwegian duo Nico and Vinz. Evening wear, business wear, day to night wear and  resort wear captivated the audience. The models had a touch of class and were not scantily clad. They were trained very well. Their walks were choreographed so well they were switched up every now and then. (Attention to detail makes for an eventful fashion show!) There were vibrant hues and muted tones that contrast between patterns, prints and solids.

french(photo courtesy Lime.tt)

It felt like Iris Atsin gave birth to a french creole concept, a Caribbean genre aptly a new Trinidadian aesthetic. The tailoring was precise. There were no copied looks. Every piece was fresh, elegant, modern and wearable! Yes! wearable, this has retail value. My jaw dropped every single time an outfit came down the runway. It dawned on me that Iris Atsin just gifted Trinidad with her  “love child” La Parisienne. Undeniably, we  must learn from her as well as  nurture, support and help her blossom in any way that we can if we are to become a collective community, the creative class that would rise and build the nation’s fashion identity and the Trinidad and Tobago destination brand.

ia(photo courtesy www.irisatsin.com)

The designer finally came out behind the curtains to do the final walk. Although, she appeared a bit shy there was power in her beauty. I guess the unwavering question lay heavy on her mind about  how her collection was received that night?! She “high fived” her models and congratulated them on a job well done. Indeed, it was a job well done. Of course I would know this since it was over and I was still reeling with excitement and my heart over bubbling with passion. There is hope for the industry! There is hope that there are those who will unite, collaborate, support and uplift the nation. (Thank you Jesus!)

Soon Sir Charles then invited everyone to have some sips by the bar, to mingle with Iris Atsin and to meet the models and look at some items she had on display also available for retail. She also does shoes, handbags and accessories.  I opted to forgo the red wine and meet up with Iris. Her french accent was so heavy and unmistakeable. She was gorgeous yet humble and anxious still to hear how her collection was received (as any designer would have been). She made time out to speak to anyone who approached her. What a beautiful person ( tears up). It would not be a surprise if her collection sells out immediately! (I could see myself in every piece and I am almost certain so does everyone else!)

sb

La Parisienne, the french connection by Iris Atsin was well received by all. Whether she knows this or not she is breaking barriers by uniting cultures and diaspora. Trinidad is one of the most diverse countries in the Caribbean. Last Friday evening she complimented this by giving us another identity  in the form of fashion one of the most powerful expressions a people can be proud of and truly thankful.

From the team at Let’s Go Trinidad and Tobago we wish you the best of luck in your journey during your stay here in Trinidad. Again, Welcome to Trinidad and Tobago and we are most delighted to have you with us.

It seems like Men are becoming quite conscious of their fashion sense as they seek out new ways to express themselves and stand out from the crowd. Alpha Male, Emo Male you name it they all share the collective conscience of finding a way to express themselves. Fashion is so powerful it is not just an art or the science of tailoring and styling colours and looks for particular profiles or personas. It is more than a mere euphemism that can be used for the greater good one that provides the basic need of clothing. It also allows the individual to express themselves, their moods through the colour they decide to wear. An outfit well put together can reveal one’s aura and impact everyone that they come in contact with whether at an interview for their dream job, a client meeting, a first date and of course the many social gatherings that pop up in life. Patterns, prints and cuts help define one’s individuality but a man’s sense of style is the ultimate wielding power of the dapper!

Don’t take my word for it just read the infinite research columns online and the same threads appear. The intervention of e-commerce and e-tailers have revolutionized men’s shopping experience. What do guys love more than their football and women…if you guessed technology ding! ding! Mucho Correcto! There are infinite blogs and styling guides to keep men updated with trends and different looks they can incorporate into their wardrobe. According to research by MarketLine the world’s menswear market is expected to exceed $402 billion in 2014. This figure has been indicated to represent a market expansion of more than 14% over a five year time span. In the United Kingdom menswear has increased sales for designers by over 40 and 50 %. It is even anticipated that the 25-34 age group is expected to increase by 11 % between 2012-2017. These men are less interested in trends. However, the 16-24 age group buy fewer but better quality items and are huge fans of online shopping and multichannel retailers. Both groups are expected to drive sales in the future.

The Caribbean including Trinidad is not to be left behind as our  creatives have designed an island aesthetic full of colour and attitude that reflects the life in this island paradise. The circumstances of Trinidadian and by extension Caribbean men from slavery, immigration and the black power movement to name a few have sculpted our men. Today, they are professionals, intellects skilled in their craft with labours of love as fathers, care takers and bread winners who exude strength in brotherhood. Their fashion tells a story and depicts a paradox of complexity in multiculturalism and simplicity in humility. In Trinidad there are several designers who assist in sharing  this island story.

So while The Dapper himself David Beckham is launching his new underwear collection in the United Kingdom we in the Caribbean are getting ready to start our own movement! We are exploring our creativity and taking advantage of that space to develop our own elixir of life in the power of fashion backed by innovation and realized through entrepreneurship.

Charu Lochan Dass

CreativityDef

So it’s big business this word ‘creativity’ that is being thrown about so often along with the ability to imagine and create something that has never been done before. In my land of Trinidad and Tobago there is a heist of fashion modus operandi that seems to be taking November like a raging tornado. While iconic and emerging designers, stylists and creative directors aspire to be ‘creative’ and host fashion shows, parties and stimulate the local landscape for glitz and glamour in fashion destination Trinidad and Tobago, one must wonder about standards. Yes, the big issue of standards. Does it apply? Who has the final say? Who says whether it’s okay or not? It would seem as though there are no gatekeepers and the quality and standards are not a big issue.  But hello “wake up” it is a big deal. What sets you apart from others is your ability to recognize innovative and functional skill and talent. It makes you more in demand and well respected for your credibility. However, one can beg to differ that if a country is made up of a pluralist society where we accept everything then our standards are in serious jeopardy. But I need not digress any further.

I was invited to the launch of a ‘ready to wear’ collection by a local designer named Charu Lochan Dass. I was a bit late so I missed what seemed to be a welcome drink and the welcome party. Nevertheless, we were ushered in by a CLD brand ambassador. What a surprise getting in and seeing Wendell Constantine as the host for the evening. There was a musical interlude complimented by an eclectic energy of anticipation from the patrons. The designer gave her last words before the show started and it was hit after hit heading down the runway. The models were gorgeous but the collection was even more fabulous. While a picture tells a thousand words it’s unfortunate I didn’t get much pictures. However, this made seeing the collection up close so much more worthwhile. The prints and cuts of each piece were quintessential. There were even drama sets in each model’s walk striking the balance of empowerment and strength of the brand. The hues of vibrant red, the splashes of riveting blue with plunging necklines and the ensembles of a powerful black with revealing bits and pieces sparked a blaze of extraordinary without being raunchy.

2013-11-27 20.38.41

The designer in her essence exuded an aura of elegance, grace, poise and humility mixed with a maturity that came with age and experience. Her  Indian heritage and Caribbean upbringing, cultural endowments (India, London, Trinidad), university qualifications and years of retail experience prepared her to ‘create’ a distinct fusion of fashion. Undeniably, this has enhanced her ability to execute her passion for fashion. This suggested to me that even though this was her first collection launch in Trinidad  she was not an ordinary new comer to the local fashion scene but a game changer. The evening was wooed with “oohs” and “aahs” at the striking emotional connections that one could actually identify with the power and passion of the collection.  It was pomp, flair mixed with a strong sip of reality as every single piece was so “ready to wear”. The show ended with a final walk from the designer, a door prize and CLD “goodie bags” (filtered fashion magazine, CLD lookbook, call cards and a CLD t- shirt)  for ladies and CLD hats  for the guys given out by CLD brand ambassadors. The aftermath was enthralled of photography, fanfare, vibes and mingling.

2013-11-27 23.15.21

I think it would be safe to say that the gate keepers have inaugurated Charu Lochan Dass as part of the Trinidad and Tobago fashion scene. The collection was well received and the launch was a success. The reviews are still coming in and they have all received Charu Lochan Dass as a remarkable designer. She is definitely making waves and crashing the shores of this fashion destination with her creativity and innovation!

Let’s Go Trinidad and Tobago would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Charu Lochan Dass for the invitation!

We wish you all the best in your future endeavors!

Style it out! Back to School!

back-to-school-2
While Trinidad and Tobago do not see a autumn/fall season we do have a wet season and we are in full throttle to the hurricane season.  This fall all college undergrads and grads are coming out with a bang! The first day of school is no longer a date on the calendar but a fashion event to remember. Hence, some fashionistas are calling on autumn trends and mixing them up with local vibes for  this semester’s functional but fashionable look.
Pantone_Fashion_Color_Report_Fall_20132
images
Pantone for each season can help you put your wardrobe together.  This season some colours to watch out for are grey, black,  navy, red, mustard, emerald, browns, coral to name a few. Dresses are taking a fancy to animal print, lace and floral that can be made uber “stoosh” with cardigans and blazers. The outfit can be dressed down with a jean jacket. In light of the season for cold weather flat boots and flats as well as some brightly colored sneakers seem to be the order of the day.Textured looks with faux fur and plaid features are the autumn favorites that can be added in minute detail than vavavoom runway styles perfect  for school. Our ladies are getting the nails done paying attention to jewel tones, metallics, holographic,  textured and sparkly glitter. The graphic tee is also making its appearance.
Moschino-fashion-show-fall-winter-2013-2014-587x440 2013-fashion-trend-graphic-print-tees-on-the-runway
While chic looks, rings and things are making an appearance. School can be quite expensive so cost effective yet eye popping “feel good” looks can be found by adding some pop up to your present wardrobe. A flirty or funky scarf can make your used outfit a belle of the halls. Hair bands and bows can add a cute stylish pop to a boring hairstyle.  Some simple accents to your outfit can be midi rings which can add that silver or gold lining accentuation to your look. A staple to your outfit is the jean. There is a throwback trend to the classic with bootcut, skinny and flare so resurrect an old pair or two.The oversized tote and school bag is seen as the stripe, messenger and patterned styles including holographic which I’m sure you have at least one of each if not all three styles in that closet of yours!
2013-spring-and-autumn-long-font-b-scarf-b-font-women-s-sun-cape-leopard-print
So this season style it out and be cool for school with these tidbit styles.
I’m sure you already have a few in mind!

Join the movement! – #fashionconsciouscricketcouture

quote

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Twenty20 Cricket Tournament is a hot topic with locals in Trinidad. Recently, Marylebone Cricket Club drafted a dress code which permits entrance into the Lord’s Cricket grounds. Some of these include shirts with collars for gentlemen but no polo shirts, T-shirts or anything made of denim. Whilst the ladies are banned from wearing bikini tops, bare midriffs, leggings without skirt. There is even a picture card to reinforce what the ideal dress code looks like. This immediately makes me think whether our cricket club needs to instill a few of these rules at Queen’s Park Oval? Our islanders are noted for wearing the said banned clothing items.Basically, this  could be a good thing or a bad thing.  My personal opinion is that this definitely spurs a fashion conscious cricket movement that could sweep the entire Caribbean!

mcc-dress-code_2218716b

So if we were to endorse these rules I still think our Caribbean designers would be able to add pomp and flair to Cricket Couture. The Art of Wear has a retro collection that maintains that golden era look with Hollywood pizzazz and an exotic twist of colour. Some of the designer’s dresses are at knee length and would work wonderfully for the event. Meiling has a few pieces in her Shirt Tales collection that speak volumes about classy couture that can be included for a Cricket finish. While there are other designers that would be on demand I believe Deron Attz and his tribal prints can make an eloquent but maintain the Caribbean’s ethnic aesthetic in its appearance at the cricket pavilion. These are my quick picks for CPL Cricket Couture!

A personal stylist is a professional in his / her science. Their job is to help you with your personal style.  This is an investment into your own branding identity. The stylist becomes familiar with your body type, skin tone, personality and uses their working knowledge of fashion to best advise you on what suits you and your personal brand identity. Let’s Get Tribal!

If there was ever a time to wear print and pattern the most I would declare Emancipation Day the official Tribal Wear Day.  My people for this very day  there is a movement to think Tribal Wear, Live Tribal Wear and Love Tribal Wear. This special day means so much at fashion destination Trinidad and Tobago. The commemoration of a nation’s freedom reflected in an expression of print of solid and strong prints showing affection for rigid foundations of family and friendship, love and unity.

This year saw several designers getting up close and personal with modern and chic looks for tribal wear. Traditional garb is fabulous but for those who want a more stylish, unique sense of appeal then designer tribal couture is definitely the way to go! Deron Attz, a very talented designer showed his tribal collection at San Fernando Fashion Week. The collection speaks about power, strength and his passion for his fashion to combine history, culture and couture. deronattz1

While other designers are trying their hand at fabric and designing tribal clothing there is a  particular designer duo who  brought Tribal Wear to a whole new level. Oh yes ! Denneza and Patrice  Oliviere and their Tribal Footwear! Sandalias Apparel is renown for their multicoloured fashionable and trendy interchangeable sandal straps. This Emancipation they brought tribal print to the market! This particular strap is sassy and steeped in culture with immediate revelations of  “oohs” and “aahs”. This makes the wearer feel empowered and ready to break their shackles and exalt their own rendition of Ella Andall’s “Bring down the power of love…” So look no further darlings every detail you need is right here in Fashion Destination Trinidad and Tobago!

Happy Emancipation!

Fashion destination – Zadd and Eastman Designs

Dare to be different then get acquainted with Zadd and Eastman Designs. These names are synonymous with cutting edge Caribbean fashion.  This duo is reckoned as the fashion elite among others. They belong to two different racial origins yet their platonic relationship brings out the best in their performance as always in the multiethnic society of Trinidad and Tobago. Their emergence on the global scene sets the stage for runway couture. They are noted for their ready to wear hand painted pieces. Regardless of style and design Zadd and Eastman are two patriots who always depict Caribbean hues. Truly, this keeps that Caribbean aesthetic in their garments that reflect Zadd and Eastman Designs.

Omzad Khan and Nigel Eastman are two gentlemen from South Trinidad. They originate from Point Fortin. From time immemorial these designers have been a favourite with the community first and the international stage thereafter. Their creativity in innovation is noteworthy. Yet, it is their humility, compassion and empathy with their clientele that have ensured customer loyalty. Hither to this the community continues to endorse their own. Usually, they are booked throughout the year so if one wants to get a booking this must be done early. Nevertheless, you can’t afford to miss out on owning one of their unique pieces. A Zadd and Eastman ensemble guarantees you a head turner if not a few head turns. You will be stunning in your choice of design. They brand their clothes and sell Caribbean pride.

Designers’ credibility has always been challenged and these two aced that challenge with perfect scores. They have graced the sets of Caribbean Fashion Week (CFW) in Jamaica. CFW has been dubbed by British Vogue as the most important trend setter event. Also, Zadd and Eastman participated in Trinidad and Tobago Fashion Week. They were invited to champion their designs at the biggest fashion event in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, “Fashion Caribbean 2010”. Zadd and Eastman belong to The Designer Critic Project 2011 at The University of Trinidad and Tobago. This is a program to critique and guide aspiring fashion designers.
