Trini Christmas Wish List – To Do

If you are visiting Trinidad and Tobago for the Holidays there are many things to do to enjoy a true Trini Christmas. The people of Trinidad and Tobago are very creative. This boldfaced creativity is anything but seasonal. Anyone interested in the destination can spot this creative energy in the food, the music, the everyday lifestyle, the way the locals work and the way they party. Popular festivals such as Carnival highlight this creativity but the far lesser known and perhaps even captivating festivity also occurs during the Holidays, a pre-cursor to Trinidad Carnival.

Here are our Editor’s Top Picks for The Trini Christmas Wish List – Things to Do

Light and Colour By Antonio Figuero

25th October, 2021: Inspiration comes in a number of ways, but for oil painter Antonio Figuero, light reigns supreme.

This is evident throughout his works, often set in the outdoors - or plein air - with scenes and captures of fleeting moments at different times of day. For many of us, such moments would pass us by, insignificant and unmemorable, but Figuero’s work has a way of making one pause, reflecting on the nostalgia of a similar memory in one’s own life, perhaps. There lies a story in the stillness of the landscape or the magnificence of the sunset, characters and creatures scattered or hidden throughout the scene that bring that stillness to life before the moment passes. It’s in the way the light hits the water, or perhaps in how it highlights an easily overlooked detail at a very specific time of day as he drives past on his way home, causing him to stop and take it all in. This, he says, is how he creates.

Figuero’s signature style is evident in his latest offering, a solo exhibition aptly entitled Light and Colour, opening at Arnim’s Art Galleria, 27 Tragarete Road, Port of Spain on November 1st and running until November 13th.  Light and Colour is a display of several months of quiet observation of a variety of locations across Trinidad, from landscapes to rural settings, truly solidifying this artist’s mastery of plein air painting.

Visitors can look forward to seeing the island and all its hidden glory, musing over the stories and interactions unfolding before their eyes. While some of the pieces are purely an appreciation for the way light works to create colour, such as the piece Glory, others are significant contributions to the cultural and historical landscape, like The Graveyard Shift in the Moonlight series, which is the last painting of the famous Powergen stacks, recorded on canvas just days before they were taken down once and for all. This display of works follows the release of Figuero’s first book Diaries of An Artist earlier this year, where viewers were invited to indulge in the stories behind the paintings and learn more about how they came to be, from a personal, historical and cultural perspective.

Light and Colour promises to be a treat for art lovers, new and seasoned alike, with pieces to suit every taste, including the reveal of Figuero’s largest oil painting to date.

Gallery hours are:

Opening day, Monday 1st November: 12pm to 7pm

Monday to Friday: 9am to 6pm

Saturday: 9am to 4pm

Admission is free.

All COVID safety protocols are in effect.

Arty Party TT

For far too long locals have grieved for something different to do in their free time. They are bombarded with the glitz and the glamour of uber chic parties and modern theater. However, they are now seemingly making trails to new discoveries or more intimate and self enriching experiences. One young lady who has realized this demand has decided to pair her knowledge, passion and experience in her niche to bring premium creative experiences to locals and persons visiting Trinidad. Sharon Burford, Trinidadian artist and illustrator is championing the local creative arts industry through her professional work at Studio 55 and her recent art initiative, “Arty Party TT.”

Her work at Studio 55 ranges from live drawings at events, “cartoonize yourself” options to personalized requests and custom orders of black and white, colour, water colour, digital and many more choices in art and design. However, it is her Arty Party TT that strikes me boldly! Persons attending this party pay for a package which includes a creative art exercise, light refreshments, camaraderie of the entire group, a sense of belonging, team building skills for you and your family, friends or significant other (if you decide to go as a team). Knowledge is imparted upon the group and they leave the event rather renewed and fulfilled. The opportunity to learn differently and enjoy something differently is present here. Art Parties take place in the evenings. They are usually themed. Art Parties take place once per week and persons must book in advance to secure their seats as groups are small. Persons who are unable to attend can also book an art party for their birthday or some special occasion.

Interestingly, Arty Party TT will celebrate their one year birthday on Friday 8th April with a signature Arty Party from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Gulf View Community Center. Persons who wish to attend must be mindful only 22 spaces are available for this event. The curator intends to do the theme in her version of Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss”. There is no age restriction or art experience prerequisite. Tickets are TTD$200.00 and more information is available at their pages below.
